Moodle LMS 5.3 has arrived! This latest Long-Term Support (LTS) release is focused on helping educators create learning with intent, with stronger tools for connecting learning to outcomes, more flexible assessment and feedback, and a clearer, more intuitive interface.
Here are the new and improved features we are excited about in this latest Moodle LMS update.
Designing learning with intent
Moodle 5.3 is bringing new Learning Outcomes tools to help educators connect what learners are expected to achieve with how learning is delivered and assessed. This helps support more flexible, robust assessment and feedback.
Multiple marker assessments were introduced in Moodle 5.2. In Moodle 5.3, the workflows have been expanded, allowing each marker to provide their own feedback alongside the overall feedback for the learner.

A clearer, more current interface
In Moodle 5.3, we see a range of visual and navigation improvements to enhance clarity, consistency, and navigation for the Moodle site.
Updated course layouts
The Moodle interface gets a refresh in 5.3, with updated typography, a centre-aligned page layout, and more intuitive page navigation. This updated interface will help reduce distractions and help educators and learners focus on teaching and learning, not navigating the platform.

Comfortable reading options
This latest update also introduces Dark mode in the Boost theme, the most requested feature by the Moodle community, providing more options for a more comfortable reading experience.

More choice and visibility for AI
In Moodle 5.3, teachers and learners get greater visibility into their AI use with new course-level AI usage reporting.

AI integrations also continue to expand with the addition of Anthropic as an AI provider supported in core.
Other improvements
Moodle LMS 5.3 also includes improvements across everyday teaching, administration, and the underlying platform, including:
- New and improved tools for teaching and content creation: New Quiz due dates, Question bank improvements, Safe Exam Browser updates, and additional content creation options.
- More useful reporting and administration: More flexible reporting, background processing for resource-intensive tasks, and improved Global Search.
- Stronger integrations: New OAuth2 support for web services provides a modern, secure way to connect Moodle LMS with other systems.
More capabilities, more flexibility for the future
For educators, the latest Moodle 5.3 introduces new capabilities for course design and assessment, practical improvements for everyday teaching, and more efficient reporting and administration, while continuing to extend and modernize the platform for future development.
Together, these improvements make Moodle 5.3 a compelling upgrade, helping institutions – whether in higher education, health, government, or corporate – design more purposeful learning experiences and manage their sites with greater confidence.
