Leveling up educator experience: Introducing Moodle 5.1

29 October 2025 by Catalyst

Moodle 5.1 is here!

Building on the momentum of Moodle 5.0, this latest release comes with improvements designed to save time, reduce clutter, and make Moodle LMS easier to use every day for educators and administrators.

“Behind every new feature, improvement, and fix are the efforts of our amazing Moodle community, our partners, and the Moodle LMS team. We deeply appreciate everyone who helped bring Moodle LMS 5.1 to life.”

Matt Porritt, Product Director – Platform Solutions, Moodle

Here are some of the latest improvements from Moodle 5.1

Expanded Activities overview page

The Activities overview page now incorporates all major activities, including forums, quizzes, H5P, wikis, lessons and more. This builds on the improvements to the Assignment activity overview page we first saw in Moodle LMS 5.0.

As a result, teachers now have better visibility of what needs to be done, while learners can stay on track with a clear view of completed work and upcoming tasks.

New and improved Activities chooser

Creating activities and assessments for learners have never been easier. In the newest redesign of the Activity chooser, activities are now organised by purpose: assessment, collaboration, communication, resources, and interactive content.

The upgraded Activity chooser now includes more information on your chosen activity and gradability, and newer ways to implement activities on your Moodle page. There are many benefits to this approach, including a more effective and engaging teaching and learning experience, and a more intuitive navigation for those who are new to Moodle.

This helps instructors and course designers decide on which activities to implement based on learning outcomes and purpose. For admins, they can now customise the Activity chooser to fit their institution’s unique course-building needs.

More controls over AI

Moodle first introduced AI in Moodle 4.5, and it continues to improve in this latest release. In addition to newly supported AI providers, instructors can now easily control how AI is being used at the course level.

This offers flexibility for educators, allowing them to decide where AI tools add value in their courses, while institutions retain control over which providers best fit their policies and needs.

Here are some more notable improvements in this latest version of Moodle – each designed to save time and simplify daily workflows for educators so that they can get time back and focus on teaching and engaging with their learners:

  • Improved course creation tools, including improvements to Assignments and enhanced TinyMCE support for Moodle hosted on-premise
  • Cleaner interface
  • Enhancement to course enrollment and management
  • Additional security features

Moodle LMS 5.1 is an exciting new milestone on the Moodle Product Roadmap. Designed to make everyday teaching and site administration easier, it showcases a strong “built for educators, by educators” focus, with the end user and technical excellence being its guiding stars.
