Everything You Need To Know About Security Audits for your Moodle

(This is Part 2 of our Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 series. Read Part 1: frequently-asked questions on keeping your Moodle data secure)

Cybersecurity is always a moving target. At any time, cyberattackers are trying to find ways to compromise your infrastructure, and exploit your data. And while no organisation can be fully secure, there are many ways to understand cybersecurity risks and minimize the risks to your organization, your systems, and learners.

Conducting security audits is one of the key mechanisms in cybersecurity risk management and consistent improvement. In this blog, we share some insights that we have learnt from our experience working on Moodle security audits.

What is a Moodle security audit, and what is actually involved?

A security audit is an assessment of your organization’s security infrastructure, policies, and practices. It identifies potential vulnerabilities and associated threats, security gaps, and reviews compliance position. This places your organization in a better place to catch security weaknesses proactively before cyber attackers can exploit them.

Audits come in many shapes and sizes, with budget and resourcing among the factors that determine scope. These can be carried out by internal or external parties, and can also form part of industry certifications such as ISO 27001 and SOC 2. Catalyst strongly recommends considering both if you manage your own Moodle infrastructure.

A security audit is about more than servers and firewalls. It can include detailed review of everything from staff off boarding policies to audit trails for access to production backup data.

Every Moodle site is different, and depending on the size and complexity of your environment, an audit may also include Moodle plugin code reviews, exposure to cross-site scripting (XSS) risks, and how API keys are used for external services.

Why is a security audit for our Moodle important?

Internal and external Moodle security audits are standard practice in ensuring that your systems are in line with security industry standards.

And little explanation is required to express the importance (and value) of your Moodle data and the availability of your Enterprise Moodle LMS. From an operational, legal and commercial point of view, vigilance is key. Malicious events can impact your organisation’s credibility, learner trust, as well as reputation.

How often should we do an audit of our Moodle?

Compliance and audit requirements can be a real operational burden, and in practice, there is no such thing as β€œtoo often” or β€œtoo thorough” for security audits. In an ideal world, these would be done on a quarterly or bi-annual cadence. Cyber hreats are always moving quickly, and with AI becoming a more sophisticated tool that can be exploited for phishing activities, cyberattackers count on complacency.

In addition to routine checks, it is also important to conduct audits / reviews when there have been major changes in your organisation (new people, new processes, etc), after software upgrades/updates, or if you have been in an cyber incidents.

Who should perform our Moodle security audit: our internal team, or a third-party?

Audits can be performed by your internal teams, a trusted third party service, or a combination of both with external specialists contributing to the overall audit and your internal team following up on the findings.

The more internal buy-in, the better, but not every organisation has the people and capacity to take on these responsibilities. In these cases, an outside party may catch what your team overlooks, and will likely approach the audit differently than you would.

If your budget allows, Catalyst highly recommends engaging a third-party provider, such as a Premium Certified Moodle Partner. They can bring an objective, fresh perspective on your Moodle environment and its particular setup, backed by deep platform expertise.

Can we automate our security audits?

The market for security-as-a-service is vast, and many of these tools focus on the technology and infrastructure layer, such as port scanning and vulnerability detection. These are certainly worth exploring. However, a security audit for your Moodle covers more than a purely automated solution can offer, and rather calls for human judgment and an understanding of your organization’s context.

How much does a security audit cost?

The cost of a security audit can range depending on a few factors, such as the size and scope of your organization and your compliance needs. This is an investment, however, and you shouldn’t cut costs when it comes to security. The cost of non-compliance, or being involved in a cyber incident can be severe, and can cost an organisation’s credibility and trust of your LMS users.

Keeping your Moodle data secure should not be complicated.

The security of your data, digital assets, and other sensitive information is more than just a Moodle instance with the latest codebase. Security audits are just one of the many obligations to keep your business operations continuous.

Keeping your Moodle LMS and data secure is a year-round process.
